What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma screening is one of the most important parts of a routine eye exam, especially as you get older. It is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. In many cases, this damage occurs gradually and without obvious symptoms at first.
Because glaucoma often affects side vision first, many people do not realise there is a problem until vision loss has already occurred. That is why it is often called the silent thief of sight.
Why is early detection so important?
Vision loss from glaucoma is usually irreversible, which is why early detection is so important. A glaucoma screening can identify warning signs before you notice any changes yourself. In some people, the pressure inside the eye is higher than normal, increasing the risk of damage. In others, it may develop even when eye pressure is not particularly high.
Your risk may be higher if you are over a certain age, have a family history of glaucoma, have diabetes, or have other health factors that affect the eyes. Even if your vision seems completely normal, regular checks are still important.
What happens during a glaucoma screening?
A screening is quick and straightforward. Your optometrist may measure intraocular pressure, examine the optic nerve, and, if necessary, perform imaging or visual field testing. These tests help build a comprehensive picture of your eye health and can detect subtle changes over time.
Having a baseline eye exam also makes it easier to monitor your eyes in future. Small changes are easier to spot when your optometrist has a reference point.
How to protect your sight?
The best way to protect your sight is to keep up with regular eye exams and not wait for symptoms to appear. If glaucoma is detected early, treatment can often slow or prevent further damage. This may include prescription eye drops, laser treatment, or ongoing monitoring.
Glaucoma screening is simple, yet it can make a big difference. If it has been a while since your last eye exam, now is a good time to book one and make your long-term eye health a priority. Contact us – 012 653 2288 or email centurion@worldofvision.co.za
